Mary Beaney
Mary has been painting seriously since 1987. She studied four years, part-time, for the Fine Art Diploma at the Eastbourne College of Arts and Technology (now known as The Southdown College) under the auspices of the Brighton University.

I have investigated various forms of media – oils, printmaking, drawing and ceramics – to represent my thoughts and emotions in an art form. I have at the present time settled on the use of acrylics on various surfaces – canvas, card, board, plaster. I tackle various subjects – portraiture, still life, flowers, and landscapes.

My work evolves from an instinctive response to the Sussex landscape. Having made sketches in situ I then work on my paintings in my studio, using acrylic and mixed media, building up with subtle layers, often scraping back and reworking. The resultant textural surface reflects nature as I see it.

The inspiration for my landscape work is Pevensey Castle (I live approx.200 yards from the Castle Walls). I am not influenced by any artist in particular but do look to the likes of Tapies and Rothko for texture and colour.

At present I am working on a project incorporating the use of mixed media and collage with a photographic element which uses the images from a Victorian Photo Album of my ancesters.  This work is loosely based on Byzantine Icons.

aspectsofachurchyard2mixedmedia.jpgLiz Brown
Liz was born and educated in Worcester. After completing a Foundation Course at the University of Gloucestershire, she obtained a BA (Hons) in Art and Design from the University of Brighton, followed by a Post Graduate Course in Art Teacher Training. Since qualifying Liz has had various exhibitions in the South East, London and the Midlands. Liz currently lives and paints in East Sussex.

Liz’s paintings aim to portray an emotional response to the source material in a free, spontaneous and intuitive way. Whatever the subject matter: landscape, sea, still life, garden scene or portrait, it is explored in a manner that aims to produce unexpected viewpoints, striving for a fresh and creative image. Experiments with different ways of applying media attempt to achieve a visually exciting result. Colour, texture and composition are always key considerations when producing a satisfying piece of work.

Barbara Walters
Barbara is a freelance artist and lecturer. She has taught a range of Adult Education classes from ‘The I Can’t Draw Club’ to City and Guilds Design and Embroidery and Advanced Textiles.  She has been Chairman of both the East Surrey and the East Sussex Branches of the Embroiderers’ Guild. She is Vice Chairman of the Society of Eastbourne Artists and a member of the Landscape and Arts Network. Her work is in private collections in England and abroad. It has been featured in several books and on a cd cover.

“My first love is teaching, passing the joy and satisfaction of creativity to others, both adults and children.  Although I trained as a textile artist I also work in acrylics and mixed media. I work with themes, very slowly.  Creation stories and legends have occupied me for over 20 years but around this theme I have embroidered countless exuberant flower gardens.  Having reached the third stage of womanhood – the Crone – I am now bringing both themes together in a series of richly patterned ‘Robes’ for Wise Women and Goddesses.   Life is so exciting and there are never enough hours in each day.”.
